Travelling broadens the mind, presenting us with opportunities to do things we wouldn’t normally do. It’s no wonder, then, that we spend £4 trillion on the travel and tourism sector annually – and most people want to travel even more.
If you happen to be one of these people, then there are a few simple ways to make it easier to travel more often:
- Find a job that helps you to travel
With many businesses holding multiple offices or having clients in different locations, there can be lots of opportunities for travel through work. These days, it is more common than ever for workplaces to use travel as a perk or selling point for potential new talent. And, they should, as it is definitely high on a lot of job-seekers’ priorities.
39% of Millennial and Gen Z workers say they would decline a job if it didn’t provide some kind of travel opportunity. Business trips are not only viewed as a chance to get out of the status quo in an office environment, but also as a way to expand their skills as well as their personal and professional fulfillment.
And 30% of workers said they would happily accept a pay cut if they could go on more business trips. This statistic clearly emphasizes how important travel is to most employees.
There are many job roles that enable employees to travel, but roles such as Account Managers, Sales Executives and obviously any roles connected with the travel industry increase the likelihood of this.
- Look out for discounts before you book
If you are happy to be flexible in your travel plans, you can make considerable savings. These can then be put towards your next trip!
For example, if you don’t mind staying just outside of your destination or at least on the fringes, the accommodation in these areas are often a bit cheaper. Or, if you can be flexible on when you travel, you might get a better deal if you start your trip on a Sunday rather than a Friday, for example.
Another great way to reduce the cost of your trip is to utilize deals with hotels, airlines and travel agents. Keep a close eye on travel discounts from booking companies, accommodation providers and anyone else you might need.
All you need to do is sign up to most of them by email and you will automatically be notified of when their next discounted offerings are available – simple!
- Make travelling a priority above all else
If you are really determined to make travel a main focus for you, you should think about how little changes to every aspect of your life could help. Take a look at your outgoings and evaluate where you could save money.
For example, can you get a better deal on your phone bill? Or, do you really need that new pair of shoes you’ve been admiring? Maybe you could strip back on how many takeaways you eat regularly or how often you eat out? All of these everyday decisions have a direct impact on your finances. By making small, clever decisions like these, you could fast track your next trip.
Once you’re in your dream destination looking at the fantastic sights, it will all be worth it.
- Buy travel guides
Travel guides can be a great way to get the most out of a trip. With sections on the best places to eat out for every budget, to tips on which days to book trips to guarantee savings, there are lots of hints and tips that will help you find little gems while saving money.
Doing your research is the best way to find top recommended spots that are often off the beaten track and will give you great value for money. They are also packed with lots of tricks to help you avoid falling for the marketing ploys of tourist companies.
For example, it might tell you which railcard to get or whether there is a certain time to buy tickets to a local tourist attraction that will save you money.
Any advice like this is invaluable in making sure your trip costs as little as possible, while still allowing you to get the most out of it. This way, you will be in a better mindset and financial position to travel more frequently, thereby helping you to reach your goals.
