Namaste from India !

Hinduism is the world’s oldest religion, according to many scholars, with roots and customs dating back more than 4,000 years. Today, with more than 1 billion followers, Hinduism is the third-largest religion worldwide, after Christianity and Islam. Roughly 94 percent of the world’s Hindus live in India. Because the religion has no specific founder, it’s difficult to trace its origins and history. Hinduism is unique in that it’s not a single religion but a compilation of many traditions and philosophies: Hindus worship a number of different gods and minor deities, honor a range of symbols, respect several different holy books and celebrate with a wide variety of traditions, holidays and customs. Now coming to  the Title context, If there is only one God/Energy/Almighty, then why is that in Hinduism, devotees pray so to many different Gods / Deities ? Is it a Superstition , a stupidity or just a generational carry forward thing ?

The Answer is No. It is very much meaningful to pray to different Deities, despite the fact that Divine is one .

Lets talk about this :

1. The Very First thing that we must understand is : There should not be any doubt whatsoever that Almighty/God/Supreme energy/ Divine / Allaha / Jesus / Lord Krishna,Rama / Devi all are ONE, and that ONE is formless energy called Mother Nature. (Kudrat in Hindi as we say). However, as a thumb rule, Whatever name we give to Divine and whatever form of Divine we pray to , Mother Nature , which actually is formless, appears before us in exactly the same form . I have already said this earlier in the Blog : Who is God ? Is there really something called God or its all a man made concept & hence a mere illusion ?Thats why a Hindu will never see Prophet Mohammed in his dreams / experiences, likewise a Muslim will never see Maa Kaali and so on – the only reason being one’s perception of Divine otherwise all are same & One only, just different names depending on faiths & beliefs.

2. The reason Hinduism has so many Gods is because it works on following principles:

a) Journey to formless ( Divine ) essentially starts with a ‘Form’ ( a Deity) in the Bhakti Marg / Devotional path*

*(The other path being Dhyan Marg whereby we straightaway try to connect with formless sitting inside us , its a relatively raw path devoid of emotions)

    b) Now based on one’s own basic nature & characteristics, a person gets naturally attracted to a particular Deity relatively much more as compared to other Deities . For example, in Hinduism, it is believed that in general, short tempered people , aggressive people , people with strong personalities ,strong point of views and dominating nature are naturally attracted towards most respected Deity “Maa Kaali” (‘Maa’ is a Hindi Language term for Mother while ‘Kaali’ refers to her relatively dark collection)because they feel that only such a strong Power Bank of Force, a Deity associated with such raw aggression alone will be able to tame them, discipline them and put them on right path.Similarly, people with relatively gentler nature usually fall in love with Deities that appear to be more subtle , soft & lovable to them .

While fact of the matter is , all Deities are same because central energy source is one ( ask Maa Kaali devotees, they will tell you that she is most lovable & kind).Once you know your Deity inside out , which will happen eventually with every seeker after substantial spiritual growth, You start understanding that ultimately, when the seeker will be ready, each one’s respective Deity will dissolve herself/himself as well as its devotee (the seeker) to be one with Mother Nature i.e. when only Singularity will exist .

Conclusion : While Divine is one but it i still very much meaningful to pray to different Deities !

    That’s all for Today !
