I have a pile of books in my cupboard. Those remained untouched for a good period. I was busy in my Content Writing job and never got time and opportunity to read one of them. And, it was just another day when I realized that a good writer must be an avid reader. Going through the tens of books I had, I picked up this beautiful book titled Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. The cover was appealing but more than that I found the title interesting. Initially, it took a day to develop a habit of reading but Kiyosaki’s book soon develops a connection with the reader and hence I started devouring it. In three or four days, I was done reading which is quite surprising for a first-time reader. Isn’t it? Well, I would say, once you start reading it, you will figure it out for yourself.
You are not the slave. Make money work for you!
To give you a gist of it, Rich Dad Poor Dad makes you understand the meaning of financial freedom. It is not like any other motivational book that preaches you. Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Poor Dad provides you with some lessons that will engrave deep in your heart forever. Even if numbers scare you, this book makes you understand finance and how to use the money for your benefit. Written in the form of a parable, Rich Dad Poor Dad is Kiyosaki’s personal finance experience. We are taught in schools to become an employee, i.e. to work for money. Kiyosaki finds a fault in this education system and says that we should be taught to become an employer i.e. how to make money work for us.
Quitting a full-time job became easy for me
Honestly, I don’t have a good equation with numbers and operations, but I understood each finance lesson of the book. Before reading this book, my understanding of an asset and liability was all wrong. But Kiyosaki made it so simple that now I call his book an asset and my life before reading it a liability. A line from the book that changed my life was, “What is the point of wanting to rise through the ranks of a company when you can own a company?” That’s when I knew that it was time to turn the tables. Did I tell you that I got so inspired by reading the book that I left my full-time job? Yes. I did. I worked as a freelancer after and started working hard for my website. I am still freelancing for other websites so that I can earn to invest in my website. This is a great idea that you can use too. Don’t quit your job if you don’t wish to but at least mind your business in the company you work. Learn from them, earn from them and use your experience and money in your business.
Seek learning opportunity in every job
Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Poor Dad is a story of how two fathers, one of them a school dropout, and the other a holder of many degrees, teach their kids about making a life. Kiyosaki uses the term “rich” and “poor” to make one understand how they should behave to have financial freedom. In the first chapter, the rich dad teaches a lesson to Kiyosaki and his best friend Mike on how to make money by asking them to clean the office for three weeks and paying as low as 10 cents per week. When Kiyosaki couldn’t take earning so less, he decides to quit. This is when the rich dad teaches the lesson about two types of people the ones who leave their job because of less pay, and the others who take everything that comes their way as a learning opportunity. Now, you get an idea, how Kiyosaki’s book teaches life lessons in simple words.
Inculcating the “rich” behavior
One of the most valuable lessons I learned from Kiyosaki’s book is to not use credit cards. As a middle-class person, we tend to use credit cards, thinking that we will pay later and let the bank pay for us. However, this is not a “rich” behavior and will not take us anywhere in the long run. Many of us think of buying a property and keeping it as an asset. Well, the rich behavior clashes with this thought process. A rich man would rent out an apartment and will use the rent to repay the monthly repayment. This is how you convert a liability into an asset. Become a shareholder of a profitable business so that you can sit back and earn for life. The rich dad in the book has everything yet he doesn’t live in a mansion. He has a simple lifestyle. I would have never understood the point unless seeing one of the protagonists of the book do so. I think this is human nature that we learn lessons from examples.
Learnt from his life examples
When I told you about leaving my full-time job, and investing in my own business, the idea came from one of the chapters of Kiyosaki’s book only. He says that the rich mind their own business i.e. make money from a company but invest it in growing their own business. This is how one gets out of the rat race. Another lesson that hit me hard while reading Rich Dad Poor Dad was that one must never work for money. Kiyosaki projects many examples from his own life about using an opportunity to learn and not earn. The book is an easy read. Hence, you will find time for reading it by yourself.
My recommendations-10/10 Go for it!
Overall, reading this book has been an enriching experience of my life. I have never backed out from doing any work or taking up a course to enhance my knowledge. Now I understand that every book I read, every project I take up, is an opportunity in itself that is adding up to my profile and taking me to the road to being successful. I would recommend everyone to read this book once in a lifetime.
Some of my friends said that they found it boring in their first read but in the next read, they learned some lifelong lessons. Take this as an opportunity and go ahead. Read Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki online or otherwise and you will neither regret buying nor investing time in reading it.
And whats better way to utilize this quarantine time in reading a valuable book?
Stay safe. Stay at home.
